How to Use Modus Flow
Master focused work sessions with this complete guide to using Modus Flow effectively.
Modus Flow is a shared focus tool that runs 60-minute sessions every hour. Instead of working alone, you join synchronized sessions with other people who are also focusing on their goals. This creates social accountability and makes it easier to stay consistent.

Learn How Modus Flow Helps ADHDHow Sessions Work
Each session has three phases that guide you through focused work
Sessions start at the top of every hour (e.g., 9:00, 10:00, 11:00). The first 5 minutes are the lobby phase where you:
- Join the session and see who else is focusing
- Set your focus intention (what you'll work on)
- Mentally prepare for deep work
- Get ready to minimize distractions
At minute 5 (e.g., 9:05), the focus phase begins. A gong sound signals the start. For the next 50 minutes:
- Work on your stated intention with minimal distractions
- See a live list of who else is currently focusing
- Stay off social media, email, and other interruptions
- If you need a break, take a 1-2 minute stretch but stay in the session
Social Accountability in Action
During focus time, you can see who else is working. Knowing that others are focusing alongside you creates gentle peer pressure to stay on task. You're not alone—you're part of a community of focused achievers.
At minute 55 (e.g., 9:55), the debrief phase begins. A bell sounds. Now you:
- Rate your focus quality (1-10 scale)
- Share what you accomplished (optional but encouraged)
- See what others achieved for motivation
- Prepare for the next session or take a longer break
Step-by-Step: Joining Your First Session
Follow these simple steps to get started
From the main navigation, click on "Modus Flow" to go to the timer landing page. You'll see a countdown to the next session and your current stats.
Click the large "Join Next Session" button. This takes you to the shared focus room.
Tip: Sessions start every hour. If you join during an active session, you'll enter the current phase. If you join during the lobby phase (first 5 minutes), you'll see an input to set your intention. Type what you'll work on, e.g., "Write proposal for client" or "Study chapter 3."
Tip: Be specific! "Work on project" is vague. "Draft 500 words of article intro" is clear. When the gong sounds, the focus phase begins. Close distracting tabs, silence notifications, and work deeply. You'll see the timer counting down and a list of who else is focusing.
When the bell sounds at minute 55, rate your focus (1-10) and optionally share what you accomplished. This helps you build a record of your productivity and motivates others.
At the end of debrief (top of the next hour), you can either join the next session immediately or take a longer break (15-30 minutes). For maximum productivity, do 2-4 sessions in a row, then take a substantial break.
Best Practices for Maximum Productivity
Tips from experienced users and productivity research
Decide in advance when you'll do Modus Flow sessions. Most people are sharpest 2-4 hours after waking. Block 2-4 sessions (2-4 hours) during your peak energy window.
Vague intentions like "work on project" don't work. Be concrete: "Write 3 email templates" or "Complete problem set questions 1-5." Specific goals increase completion rates.
Before the focus phase starts: phone in another room (or silent/airplane mode), close email and social media tabs, wear headphones, tell others you're unavailable. Set up your environment for success.
Add friends who also use Modus Flow. Knowing a friend is in the same session dramatically increases accountability. You can even coordinate to join the same sessions.
During debrief, share what you accomplished. This reinforces your progress and motivates others. Celebrating small wins builds momentum for future sessions.
Check your stats page weekly to see total sessions completed, average focus scores, and level progress. Visible progress is the #1 motivator for knowledge work (research by Amabile & Kramer).
Don't aim for perfect focus every session. Even a 6/10 focus session is valuable. The goal is to show up consistently. Over time, consistency beats intensity.
If you join mid-session (during focus phase), you won't set an intention during lobby. That's OK! Decide what you'll work on before joining. The lobby is just a formal declaration, not a requirement.

Common Questions
No problem! You'll enter at whatever phase is currently active. If it's the focus phase, you jump straight into working. If it's debrief, you can rate your focus for whatever time you participated. The sessions repeat every hour, so you can always catch the next one from the beginning.
Yes. Life happens. If you need to leave, just close the page. There's no penalty. That said, committing to finish what you start builds discipline. Try to stay for the full 50-minute focus block when possible.
Most productive people do 2-4 sessions per day (2-4 hours of deep work). Research shows that humans can only sustain truly focused work for 3-5 hours per day. Quality over quantity. Start with 2 sessions daily and build from there.
Regular Pomodoro apps are solo tools—you decide when to start. Modus Flow runs on a fixed schedule (every hour) and is social. You work alongside others, creating accountability. The hourly schedule also removes decision fatigue—you don't waste time deciding "should I start now?" The session is always starting at the top of the hour.
